From one year to the nextSecond call for proposals in the field of ERTMS : a new impulse for Corridor D Under the multi-annual programme TEN-T programme 2007-2013, the amount of 500 M¤ has been set aside for the deployment of the ERTMS actions. During the first call for projects, in 2007, 21 M¤ were allocated to the Corridor D project. The grants requested in May 2009, as part of the second call for projects should cover the deployment of ERTMS on the remaining sections in Spain, France, Italy and Slovenia. The European Commission is expected to reach a decision by the first months of 2010. |
Corridor D project is part of the idea of promoting a "European rail network giving priority to freight" with a view to energising transport of goods by rail in Europe and increasing its efficiency. The establishment of such a network will contribute to develop sustainable mobility, encouraging the modal shift from road to rail. The project aims at developing technical interoperability, particularly through the deployment of a common European signalling system and the removal of operational and operating barriers along the 3 000 kilometre route. Objective: to provide a freely moving freight service from Valencia in Spain to Budapest in Hungary. Corridor D crosses Europe from West to East and is interconnected with Corridors C (Antwerp-Basel-Lyon), A (Rotterdam-Genoa), B (Stockholm-Naples) and E (Dresden-Budapest). Infrastructure managers, Member States and rail freight operators in Spain, France, Italy, Slovenia and Hungary are all involved in the project. Their joining in the project is necessary for harmonising and coordinating the investments and the measures required to improve quality of service. |
Along the corridorIn September 2009, the contract for ERTMS deployment on French lines was been awarded to Alstom Transport. The deployment of ERTMS will concern French sections of Corridor C and D, first on pilot sites, and then for all 2200 km by 2018. In December 2009, Italy has completed the core of its High Speed network : 1000 Km between Torino-Milano-Napoli-Salerno are now equipped by the most advanced technologies and, for about 650 Km by ERTMS level 2. The Italian goal is to extend ERTMS on more than 1500 km of conventional lines within 2015, of which 650 km on Corridor D. European newsThe second TEN-T Project Management Workshop took place in Brussels on 12-13 January 2010. Many topics linked to TEN-T projects were discussed. The event was organised by the Trans-European Transport Network Executive Agency (TEN-T EA) mainly to offer the possibility to TEN-T funding beneficiaries (including Corridor D) to provide feedback regarding their experience with TEN-T funding. EU members states have recently backed a proposal by the Commission to contribute almost 240 millions euros to 26 ERTMS projects across the EU.
Two thirds of the TEN-T funding would be located along ERTMS corridors. Globally, this funding will contribute to the installation of ERTMS on 2500 km of lines and 550 trains due to be equipped before the end of 2013,
and to the promotion of measures to ensure interoperability across projects. |
