Sustainable mobility

More efficient transport is in the general interest

Corridor D links various markets between Valencia in Spain and Budapest in Hungary. By improving the quality of the rail service, Corridor D encourages the modal shift from road to rail freight. This fits fully into the sustainable development objectives set by the European Commission.

The modal shift from road to rail is the main aim of the TEN-T projects. A reduction in greenhouse gas emissions caused by road transport is a priority in Europe and EU Member States. Likewise, efforts should be made to reduce congestion on the roads. Because road transport has advantages in terms of flexibility, short reaction times and cost, it has absorbed most of the increase in the freight transport needs up to the present time.

The aim of the freight corridors project is to offer a service that is more competitive than road haulage. This implies :

  • improving travelling times
  • reducing technical and operational costs
  • improving operational conditions at borders
  • maximizing available train paths
  • increasing service reliability

By creating a better distribution of traffic between various methods of transport, Corridor D will provide numerous advantages for the economy, the environment and the quality of life for Europe's citizens.
